POST 6 GENDER ROLES AND STEREOTYPES

Hi Dears:

I'm going to answer the following question: are more nurses female or male in your country?
the answer is  that there are obviously more female nurses. This is because nursing has always been considered as a career for women since ancients ages. It comes from Christian doctrine, because  women have been deemed as humanitarian and caregivers, while men, on the contrary, are deemed as providers and stronger than women, so they don't have the sensitivity of women to take care of someone (stereotypes). Also, if we read the history, there are a few of male nurses, the vast majority are female nurses; for example: Hildegard von Bingen was a great doctor (and other professions) of the middle ages.

In Chile, that thought is changing, because when I go to a healthcare center, a man takes care of me and has the same jobs of woman. I have friends that they're studying nursing and they don't feel uncomfortable. I can't tell you about others countries because I have never been in a hospital of another country (fortunately).

Finally, I agree that everybody has the sames chances to study what they want. But there is one career that is deemed only for women, and that is preschool teacher.

Thanks for reading.
